We advocate to ensure California’s school buildings and grounds are developed as sites of student health, learning, climate resilience, and decarbonization.
Priorities

Establish a regional network of Climate Resilient Schools Coordinators
A grant program for 11 regional staff members is needed to support technical assistance and capacity building via County Offices of Education for LEAs to advance climate-resilient, healthy, cost-efficient schools across California.

Extend the CalSHAPE program to provide $192M for school HVAC upgrades
The California Schools Healthy Air, Plumbing and Efficiency Program (CalSHAPE) provided funding to upgrade HVAC systems in public schools across California.

Embed climate resilience into existing school planning
Three recommendations to modernize California school safety and planning expectations to align with today’s climate realities, without new appropriations.
